eezy – the simple check-in/check-out tariff

eezy.nrw makes bus and rail travel very simple: It means you can be mobile throughout North Rhine-Westphalia without any knowledge of tickets or fares.

When you start your journey, simply click the “Check in now” button, confirm your starting stop and off you go. No matter how often you change trains, you only check out again at the end of your journey. The fare is then automatically calculated on the basis of a fixed basic price as well as the distance “as the crow flies” between the start and the destination – regardless of the actual journey route undertaken.

To use eezy, you need the Rheinbahn App. In addition to intelligent timetable information, this also offers you a map function with detailed display of footpaths. This means you travel not just from stop to stop, but from door to door.

Pricing information

The price for a journey with eezy.nrw in the VRR area is never higher than a single ticket at the respective price level (exception: journeys in 1st class). 

And: No matter how often you travel using eezy: Within a 24 hour period, you will be charged a maximum of 25 euros (in the zone of the Rhine-Ruhr Verkehrsverbund) or 30 euros (in NRW).

FAQs: How eezy.nrw works

eezy.nrw is an electronic tariff (eTarif), that can be used via a smartphone using an app. eezy.nrw makes bus and rail travel even simpler. The price for the distance travelled is calculated digitally on the basis of the distance “as the crow flies” between the start and the destination.

With eezy.nrw, you check in with your smartphone when you get on the bus or train, and check out again when you get off. The ticket price for the journey is simply calculated from a fixed basic price and the kilometres “as the crow flies” between the start and destination, and is billed via the Rheinbahn App.

Initially, eezy.nrw is aimed in particular at occasional users of bus and rail services.

eezy.nrw can be used to travel throughout NRW. The eezy.nrw zone is valid in all areas where regional eTariff areas of the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV), Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS) and WestfalenTarif are valid.

eezy.nrw is a purely electronic tariff, for which no paper tickets are issued. The products of the classic tariffs can continue to be bought in the form of paper tickets.

eezy.nrw can be used, inter alia, with the new Rheinbahn App.

Tickets are purchased in three easy steps via check-in/check-out:

  1. Before boarding the bus or train, you check in for your journey via smartphone. The starting position is recorded (the tracking function on your smartphone must be switched on). Then the journey starts.
  2. During the journey, a digital ticket with a QR code is displayed in the App – to enable your ticket to be inspected.
  3. Check out again at the final stop when you get off, by tapping the App. Done.

The App automatically calculates the distance between the start and destination stops. A basic price plus a price per kilometre “as the crow flies” is charged. Different zones, tariff routes or minor detours no longer need to be taken into consideration.

The price is calculated only after the journey has been completed, on the basis of the distance travelled “as the crow flies”. For this reason, a ticket cannot be bought in advance.

Payment is made for example by PayPal, credit card or direct debit – depending on which booking procedure was activated in the Rheinbahn App beforehand.

Select “Check in now and go” to open the ticket purchase function for eezy.nrw. Here you can also add further people or children and bicycles (under the menu item “Show more tickets”). In addition, you will also find the preselected starting stop here. You can change this, of course. Your ticket is valid only once you have clicked on the check-in button and you start your journey at the selected stop.

It is of course possible to take other people, children or bicycles with you, and this can be booked accordingly in the App. For additional adults, simply increase the number of tickets to the desired total. Children or bicycles can be added under the option “Show more tickets”. In addition, you can book a 1st class supplement here. Note: The extra tickets must be added before checking in, and are then always valid for the entire journey.

Your smartphone must be switched on throughout the entire journey, and tracking services and mobile data use must also be activated (no flight or offline mode). In addition, the QR code must be shown to a ticket inspector. The QR code must be fully visible. The App may not be closed during the journey, but can run in the background.

Within any 24 hour period, a maximum of 25 euros is charged within the VRR zone (30 euros in NRW) – irrespective of how many kilometres have been travelled. This price limit applies to 2nd class travel.

In the event of one or more changes, passengers merely need to stay checked in on the App. Check-out takes place only at the end of the trip. Only the basic price plus the “as the crow flies” kilometres are charged.

Without checking-in, passengers will not receive a digital ticket (travel authorisation) on their smartphone. In the event of a ticket inspection, a ticket surcharge will then be levied.

The Rheinbahn App sends a push notification to remind the user to check out.

No, because just as with other digital tickets purchased with an app, the ticket is valid with immediate effect, and therefore cannot be refunded. This does not mean transport companies cannot reach goodwill arrangements on a case-by-case basis.

After checking in, you will receive a digital ticket in the App with information in plain text and a QR code. The QR code must be shown on the smartphone display during a ticket inspection. Upon request, you must also be able to present an official photo ID, as the ticket is non-transferable. When boarding a bus, please also scan the QR code directly, using the equipment provided on the vehicle.

The check-in needs to take place before you board the bus or train. If a passenger checks in only after boarding the vehicle, he or she will be travelling without a valid digital ticket until then.

The passenger is responsible for ensuring that his or her smartphone is properly operational throughout the entire journey. If the passenger is unable to display a digital ticket to an inspector, he or she will be required to pay a ticket surcharge.

Because of legal capacity criteria (payment processing), only persons aged 18 and over may book an eezy.nrw ticket.

  • Children aged less than 6 travel free of charge and do not need to be added to the booking.
  • In the case of children from 6 up to and including 14 years of age, half price is charged.
  • Young people from 15 up to and including 17 years of age are treated as adults and must be booked accordingly.

The eTariff charge is fairer than the classic tariff because only a basic fee plus the “as the crow flies” kilometres actually travelled are charged. This does not necessarily mean, however, that it is always cheaper. All established tariffs will be retained so that these can continue to be used.

Unfortunately, check-in is not possible if there is no internet connection. Passengers must then use different ticketing options. All VRR tickets are available in the Rheinbahn App. If it is not possible to check out immediately, do so at a location with a data connection – if possible, close to the exit station.

Yes, an eezy.nrw ticket is valid on all local buses and trains in North Rhine-Westphalia.

eezy.nrw can be used on buses and trains (trams and light rail, regional trains, regional express and S-Bahn trains) of local transport service providers in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is not valid on long-distance trains (e.g. ICE, IC).

The geographical scope of eezy.nrw covers the areas in which the eTariffs of the transport associations (“Verkehrsverbünde”) are valid within NRW. In addition, the eTariffs in NRW also include certain individual lines outside North Rhine-Westphalia, for example the train connection to Venlo Station with the RE 13 or to Arnhem Central with the RE 19. Journeys to other federal states in Germany are not possible at the start of the eTariffs.

Each transport association, with its own particular mix of urban and rural components, is quite individual and difficult to compare with others. In terms of public transport management, this results in different costs for the transport associations in North Rhine-Westphalia. This also affects the calculation of the fare “as the crow flies” with different kilometre prices.

The basis for calculating the fare is the distance “as the crow flies” between the starting point and the destination of the journey, that is to say the shortest distance. The price is made up of a fixed basic price per journey plus an operating price per “as the crow flies” kilometre or part thereof.

Yes, there is a daily cap for a dynamic 24-hour period. For this period, the total price for the sum of all journeys with eezy.nrw within the VRR area is limited to a maximum of 25 euros (30 euros in NRW). If one of the journeys is not completed within the 24-hour period, this will be considered the first journey of a new 24-hour period.

In addition, a journey with eezy.nrw within the VRR area is no more expensive than a single ticket at the respective price level.

Within a fare zone, the respective basic fare (1.30 to 1.50 euros) plus the prices per “as the crow files” kilometre (0.20 to 0.27 euros) applicable in the respective fare zone are charged.

In the case of journeys that cross several tariff zones, 1.60 euros plus the “as the crow flies” kilometres travelled in the respective tariff zone always apply.

A price calculator is available on eezy.nrw. Passengers can use this to show the price in advance.

Yes. You can view the invoices directly in the App. In the App, the invoice can be found under the “Expired” tickets, which you can then conveniently save or print out.

If tickets are booked for additional persons, the basic price per person and the corresponding price per “as the crow flies” kilometre will be charged.
The fare, which is made up of the basic fare and the working fare, is multiplied by the total number of people. The daily cap applies per person.

A flat-rate surcharge for 24 hours will be levied for the carriage of bicycles, which corresponds to the current price of the one-day bicycle ticket “FahrradTagesTicket NRW”. The validity period is linked to the 24-hour period of the person making the booking.

There is no limit on the number of additional bookings for children and bicycles. In the case of adults, however, additional bookings are limited to a maximum of ten people.

When using 1st class, the price per journey increases by 50 percent. The 24-hour price is capped at 45 euros.

As the price is determined only at the end of the journey, the price is not known before the journey begins and an amount of 15 euros is reserved. A claim arises only when the sum of the final due price has been determined; the residual reserved amount will then lapse.

FAQs: Data protection

Your personal data will only be processed once you have successfully registered in the Rheinbahn App. The App stores your personal data. The App records your contact and journey data and calculates the fare. The journey is billed via a financial service provider with whom you have registered a payment procedure.

No. If you do not activate an app or use an eezy function, your GPS-based tracking data will not be collected.

Your personal data will only be passed on to third parties if this is necessary for the purpose of fulfilling a contract with you or if you have expressly consented to this. As far as necessary, data may be transferred to service providers for the purpose of processing the contract. These service providers are contractually obliged to comply with data protection regulations and only process personal data in accordance with the instructions of the data controller.

For all processing steps, high data security standards are applied in accordance with the legal provisions. These measures are continuously updated and improved in line with technical developments.

Your data will only be stored for as long as is necessary to fulfil the contract with you or to comply with statutory retention periods. Thereafter, your personal data will be deleted.

No. In order to use certain functions and services in the App, such as ordering tickets, you need to register and provide certain personal data. It is therefore imperative that you have read and understood the data protection provisions.

Data may also be transferred to recipients outside the European Economic Area (EEA). Steps are taken to ensure that a transfer to third countries only takes place if there is a legal basis for this.

The party responsible for processing your data when using eezy tariffs is your contracting partner – in the case of the Rheinbahn App, this means Rheinbahn AG. Contact details are set out in the App menu and in the data protection information.

FAQs: Rheinbahn App

Registration in the new Rheinbahn App is performed via “My Rheinbahn”. This account can also be used for the redy App as well as AboOnline and other future digital applications at Rheinbahn.

No. As the two booking systems are different, the existing tickets cannot be transferred.
The old Rheinbahn App will remain operational until further notice. This means tickets that have already been purchased can still be used as and when required.

The “Abo per App” function has not yet been integrated in the new Rheinbahn App. For this reason, users should retain the old Rheinbahn App so that they can continue to to use their subscription ticket. As soon as the function becomes operational the new Rheinbahn App, we will notify you accordingly.

You have forgotten your password for “My Rheinbahn” for the Rheinbahn App and need a new password? Please follow these steps:
Rheinbahn App > Main menu > Login > Click password forgotten. You will then be sent an e-mail with a link to set a new password.

You can find your tickets purchased in the Rheinbahn App under the menu item “My tickets”.

Please present your smartphone with the ticket (barcode) on the display to the ticket inspector or driver. You will also need to present a valid photo ID. When boarding a bus, please scan your ticket directly using the scanner near the driver, without being asked.

If you are not able to show a mobile ticket at a ticket inspection, even though you bought a ticket before you started your journey, this will initially be regarded as travelling without a valid ticket. Please contact us in this event.

No, mobile tickets are excluded from cancellations or reimbursements.

When registering, you can choose between the payment methods PayPal, direct debit, credit card and the prepaid method (not available for eezy.nrw!).

If you pay by direct debit or credit card, the amount will be debited automatically within the next 1 to 3 working days.

Tickets purchased via the App can be found under the menu item “My tickets”. If you have changed your smartphone, log in with your “My Rheinbahn” account in the main menu under “Log in”. Tickets that are still valid will automatically displayed once again.

Paying for your tickets by credit card is simple. On certain occasions, a TAN may requested in the ordering process to confirm the payment. This is the so-called 3-D Secure procedure, a security standard to protect against card misuse on the internet. We have no influence over how frequently such checks are requested.
